Squadron Signal Pub. 8274 F/A-18E/F Detail & Scale
As the time approached, in the 1990s, for the USN's main carrier strike assets (A-6s) to retire, the Navy faced a future where it would have very truncated offensive capabilities.
The existing F-18A/Cs had replaced the A-7s at the end of the 1980s, and showed that they had a shorter range and carried less ordna nce than the A-7. What McDonnell Douglas proposed was a much expanded version of the F-18, these came to be designated F/A-18E/F Super Hornets. The first Super Hornet took to the air in 1995, and entered service in 1999 with the USN. The Super Hornet has not only replaced the A-6, but also the venerable F-14 in the USN's Carrier Air Groups. This title shows an in-depth look at the cockpit, airframe, radars, weapons, and engines of the backbone of US Naval aviation. Includes the E/F-18E, E/A-18F, and E/F-18G Growler variants. Also covers Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, as well as a 4-page modeling summary.
Illustrated with 206 b/w and 51 color photos, 5 color drawings, 4 b/w line drawings. Kinzey; 80 pages.
