Scalextric C3099 Ford Escort Mk 1 No.7 1972 East African Safari
African Safari Rally in 1972. This was a massive achievement at the time which didn't go unnoticed by Boreham and the Ford Motor Company. After a disastrous 1971 Safari, where the Ford team suffered numerous engine maladies, they reverted to the RS1600 engine which was more reliable and couldn't be beaten on pace. Mikkola lead from the off and was only really troubled by his team-mate Timo Makinen who then suffered mechanical problems and eventually finished 8th. Sobies Zasada driving his Porsche 911S finished second in a rally which saw only 18 competitors finish as the rally lived up to its marathon reputation. Kenyan Vic Preston Jr took third in his Boreham Escort RS1600.
Mikkola's rally career spanned 31 years. His most successful period was during the 1970s and 1980s. The 1970s saw Mikkola a frontrunner in many international events, usually in a Ford Escort.
