The T26E3 experimental heavy tank was developed to combat the German Panthers and Tigers and pushed into service in March 1945. It was standardized as the Heavy Tank M26 and was named Pershing after General Pershing.
The M26 was re-designated from heavy tank to medium tank in March 1946, and rearmed with a 90mm M3A1 gun with evacuator and a single muzzle brake, the end result was re-designated M26A1. The M26A1 saw action in the Korean War from 1950 onward, and fought along with M46 and M4A3E8 against T-34/85s of the North Korean Army.
